"Diamond" is a song by English musician Elton John, co-written with Bernie Taupin. It was released on John's album "Caribou" in 1974 and became a hit on both sides of the Atlantic. The song was inspired by Marilyn Monroe, who was commonly referred to as a "diamond". The lyrics paint a picture of a glamorous woman, pursued by admirers but ultimately alone and unsatisfied. The chorus is a repetition of the phrase "shine on, you crazy diamond" which has since become a cultural reference. Despite being one of his most popular songs, John has stated that he doesn't particularly enjoy performing "Diamond" live.
